A video apparently showing the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, kissing a youngster on the lips and then inviting the child to “suck his tongue” has sparked outrage. During an exchange in which the youngster was paying his respects, the Buddhist monk extended his tongue and asked the boy to suck on it.

The Buddhist monk apologized to the youngster in the popular video, his family, and “friends all over the world” on his official Twitter account, expressing remorse for the “hurt” his comments had caused. He prefers to communicate with others in a “playful and innocent” manner, the statement continued.

This comes only weeks after the Dalai Lama appointed an 8-year-old Mongolian child born in the United States to the position of 10th Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche, the third highest level in Tibetan Buddhism. On March 8, a ceremony including both the Dalai Lama and a little child was held in Dharamshala.

Though there was no reply from the Dalai Lama’s administration, putting one’s tongue out is a show of greeting and respect in Tibetan tradition. The Dalai Lama’s team did not return phone calls or WhatsApp messages.

Twitter users were outraged by the occurrence, with many calling it “creepy,” “disgusting,” and “repulsive” behavior.

Another Twitter user, @NatlyDenise_, commented, “This is a terrifying scene!” The Dalai Lama, who has already had links to NXIVM, was captured on tape making attempts toward an Indian youngster. The boy’s body language is apparent as he yanks back the first time, then tosses his head skyward as the Dalai-Lama shouts, ‘SUCK…'”
